The C30 R-DESIGN Sport has a choice of four petrol engines from the 1.6 to the range topping 230PS T5, three diesels (the frugal 1.6D, 2.0D and D5) and an eco friendly 1.8 FlexiFuel bio-ethanol model.

Residual value experts and give the SportsCoupe a favourable position against key rivals. CAP Monitor forecasts that after three years/36,000 miles, trade values for the R-DESIGN Sport diesel models will be between 46-55% of their original list prices, with the petrol variants retaining a strong 47-56%.

For less sport and more luxury, you can choose the refined SE specification for the same price as the R-DESIGN Sport or, for a mixture of the two, you can opt for R-DESIGN SE Sport, starting at £17,245 for the 1.8 petrol model.

The most luxurious version, the SE LUX, starts at £17,495 for the 1.8 engine. The SE LUX trim offers leather upholstery, heated front seats, power folding door mirrors with ground lights, a headlamp cleaning system and 17” polished alloy wheels.

New Octavia is Auto Express’ Driver Power Best Car 2008

9.4.08: More than 32,000 independent members of the public voted in the reliability and satisfaction poll, making it a true reflection of how pleased people are with their cars. This year, as with last, Octavia owners are the happiest of the bunch. This latest glowing report means that 2008 is the fifth consecutive year that a Škoda model has finished in the top five.

The survey asked respondents for their opinions on all aspects of car ownership. They were quizzed on their vehicle’s reliability, build quality, running costs, performance and ease of driving: basically everything that contributes to a favourable ownership experience.

David Johns, Auto Express’ Editor in Chief, said: “… owners have struggled to find any faults with Škoda’s family car.”

Škoda UK Brand Director, Robert Hazelwood, is delighted, but not surprised by this latest success. “Having toppled Lexus from the top spot in the Top Gear customer satisfaction survey last year, we’re delighted with the news that Octavia is the top car in this latest survey from Auto Express. This proves we’re the Manufacturer of Happy Drivers.”

Seven seats now standard on all Nissan Pathfinders

9.4.08: Nissan has added a third row of seats to the entry-level Pathfinder TREK making all models in the range seven seaters as standard.

The new third row has two individual, flexible seats which can be positioned both up, both down or separately, allowing 5, 6 or 7 people to be accommodated. As the second row of seats also folds flat the vehicle is ideal for carrying large and long loads, like furniture boxes from IKEA.

Although entry-level, the £23995 TREK is generously equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, colour coded bumpers, chrome grille, dual zone climate control air-conditioning, Bluetooth® phone integration, six airbags (driver, passenger, side and curtain), remote Superlocking with anti-hijack feature and an alarm system.

Safety features include Nissan’s electronic switchable ALL MODE 4x4 system. In Auto mode, two-wheel drive is used until conditions require four-wheel drive – keeping fuel consumption down and traction constantly maintained. ESP+ quickly corrects any detected wheel slippage during cornering and ‘uphill start support’ prevents roll back on pull away. On automatic transmission versions ‘downhill drive support’ prevents loss of control on steep and slippery descents.

The seven seater TREK is now available to order through Caffyns Nissan and comes complete with a comprehensive three year, 60,000 mile warranty.

  R-DESIGN bodykit for Volvo’s V0) sportwagons

13.3.08: The Volvo V50 sportswagon is also available in the new sports inspired R-DESIGN bodykit with the 1.6 R-DESIGN sport model available for £19,195.

Last May the Volvo V50 had a comprehensive redesign to enhance dynamism, versatility and safety. The rear benefited from the addition of slimmer tail lights equipped with LED brake lights to enhance the car’s shoulder, while the interior now boasts more storage space and carrying versatility.

The R-DESIGN package - introduced last autumn - brought a range of unique sports inspired and exterior details to the Sport and SE Sport variants. New exterior design includes an R-DESIGN badge in the front grille, colour coordinated body kit, rear roof spoiler, silver matt finish front grille and wing mirrors, unique five spoke 17" alloy wheels for Sport models and 18" alloy wheels for SE Sport.

Prices confirmed for Audi’s new premium compact cabriolet

13.3.08: Audi’s new A3 Cabriolet converts to topless mode and back extraordinarily rapidly and genuinely accommodates four passengers without ruling out impressive luggage capacity.

The hood has a large, heated glass rear window, and in Sport and S line versions with fully automatic operation, can be lowered in just 9 seconds or raised in 11 seconds at speeds of up to 19mph. Because it folds up into a Z-pattern, luggage space is unaffected so it has not been necessary to move the rear bench seat forward. This gives ample rear legroom and the split/folding rear seat back - a standard feature – boosts load capacity from 260 litres to a maximum of 674 litres.

The majority of the petrol and diesel engines powering the A3 and A3 Sportback are carried over to the new Cabriolet. These are combined with either a five or six-speed manual gearbox, depending on version, or the option, for all models bar the 1.9 TDI, of the acclaimed S tronic twin-clutch transmission.

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet opens for UK order this week in standard, Sport and S line forms with on-the-road prices starting from £20,750, rising to £27,060. First deliveries of all versions will start in May.

3 years free servicing for the popular Volvo V50 range

13.3.08: The Volvo V50 sportswagon is Volvo’s best selling model in the UK with more than 23,000 taking to British roads since its launch in 2004 – and now it’s even more appealing. The UK’s favourite Volvo comes with three years free servicing (retail customers only) worth, on average, just under £700.

The three years free servicing is available on all new models registered at authorised Volvo dealers, including Caffyns Volvo in Eastbourne and Porslade. Labour for all scheduled services is taken care of, along with a wide range of parts, including: oil filter, engine oil, diesel fuel filter, diesel particulate filter, pollen filter, brake fluid, air filter, spark plugs and washer fluid when required.

This enables Volvo V50 owners to relax, knowing they are covered by expert service protection for three years or until the car reaches either 37,500 or 54,000 miles dependent on engine. This offer stays registered to the car and is transferable to the car’s new owner should it be sold on within 3 years. Owners selling on the Volvo V50 at 3 years/36,000 miles should also benefit from outstanding residual values.

Citroën's C1 – the UKs lowest fuel cost

Figures from the latest New Car Fuel Consumption & Emission Figures, produced by the Department for Transport’s Agency, VCA, reveal that the Citroën C1 Diesel will consume just £736 of fuel to cover 12,000 miles - less than half the cost of many large family cars – and the lowest of any conventionally powered car listed and available today.

The C1 Diesel, with CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km also falls into one of the current two lowest bands for Vehicle Excise Duty – today costing just £35/year – meaning that a C1 owner could tax their vehicle for eight years for less than the owner of the most polluting car would have to pay for just one year.

In addition, for those living in London, the car is set to be congestion charge free later this year – offering owners a potential further saving of over £1,500/year.

And a family driver, who may need more space, can still cover 12,000 miles for just a fraction over £800 of fuel in another £35/year Road Fund Licence and Congestion Charge exempt car - the Citroën C4 1.6HDi which, thanks to its Electronic Gearbox System produces less than 120 g/km of CO2.

It’s crammed with personal anecdotes and behind the scenes information from every stage of his career.   Smart keyless technology for Ford Focus and Mondeo

11.3.08: Ford Mondeo and new Focus drivers no longer need their keys ready either to unlock their car or to start its engine.

Thanks to Ford's optional new keyless entry and ignition technology, the doors unlock automatically as the driver pulls a door handle. Once inside, ignition is triggered at the press of the motorsport-inspired Ford Power button.

Using keyless entry and ignition is more convenient and has specific practical benefits. If in a hurry or carrying a load, there is no need to stop and hunt in pockets or bags for the car key – especially helpful in bad weather. The car's electronics confirm the key's presence in a pocket or bag, unlock the doors and, if dark, activate the car's 'puddle' lights in the wing mirrors immediately once door or boot handle are applied. The engine is fired up by touching the Ford Power button with the clutch pedal depressed. The button is the same as fitted in Ford World Rally Championship and Formula Ford race cars.

Locking your car key inside the cabin also becomes a mistake of the past because the system's interior antennae sense the key's whereabouts inside the cabin and inhibits the locking mechanism.

The system costs £500 for the Focus Titanium and £540 for Mondeo Ghia and Titanium models.

Hamilton and Moss confirmed for the Brooklands Motoring festival

11.3.08: Motor racing heroes Lewis Hamilton and Sir Stirling Moss are making star driving appearances at this year’s Brooklands Motoring Festival: ‘The Double Twelve’.

The festival, which takes place over 28-29 June in Weybridge, Surrey, will be an action-packed weekend of entertainment. The appearance by the drivers is particularly apt as the festival is only one week before the British Grand Prix. Peter O’Halloran, managing director of Mercedes-Benz World, commented: “Brooklands was the birthplace of circuit motor-racing as we know it today and witnessed countless world records being made after its opening in 1907. It was therefore extremely fitting for us to welcome key figures on the current circuit such as Lewis Hamilton and racing legend Sir Stirling Moss.”

  Škoda produces two-millionth Octavia

11.3.08: Škoda has recently produced its two-millionth Octavia in the Czech Republic. The milestone vehicle was a silver Octavia Scout 2.0 TDI.

The Czech firm has been producing contemporary Octavias since 1996 (the first cars to sport the name were produced in the 1960s). In 2004, the current generation model was launched. However, due to huge demand, the older model (now called the Octavia Tour) was also kept in production.

Main production of the Octavia Tour takes place in the Czech town of Vrchlabí. However, there are also assembly points in India, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Ukraine and Bosnia. Current generation models are produced in Mladá Boleslav with assembly points located in India, Russia, the Ukraine and Bosnia. Since 2007, the vehicle has also been manufactured in China under a licensed production arrangement. The Octavia is called ‘Laura’ in India and ‘Ming Rui’ in China.

Both models are available as a 4x4, while the new Octavia is also available in vRS and Scout guise.

Altogether the company has produced 1,315,000 first-generation Octavias and 685,000 second-generation Octavias since the market launch 12 years ago.

Škoda delivered 72,529 Octavia Tours and 237,422 new Octavias in 2007.

New Octavia is the 2007 Auto Express Driver Power survey ‘Car of the Year’ and the brand was number one overall in the 2006 Top Gear Customer Satisfaction Survey

Young Chefs on the Rise in the Michelin Guide France 2008

11.3.08: Featuring more than 600 new addresses, the 2008 edition of the Michelin Guide France attests to the growing stature of a new wave of young chefs who emphasise product quality while expressing their own personalities through the dishes they serve.

Another emerging trend this year is reflected in the selection of “petites maisons” – small restaurants situated off the beaten track, most often in the country. Discovered by Michelin inspectors during their travels throughout France, these restaurants often serve authentic regional cooking.

This year’s guide includes practically the same number of restaurants with stars (529) as with the Bib Gourmand pictogram (510). Restaurants awarded the Bib Gourmand label serve good food and offer a fixed-price menu for less than 28 euros outside the Paris area and 35 euros in Paris. These are the inspectors’ favourites. In all, the guide features a selection of 8,655 establishments, of which more than 5,000 are hotels and guesthouses and over 3,500 restaurants, extending across all comfort and price categories.

The English language Michelin Guide France 2008 is released on 19 March 2008 in the UK priced at £15.99. The Michelin Guide Paris 2008 is also being released, priced at £9.99. For more information: www.cartesetguides.michelin.fr

Touareg gains power boost as new R50 model goes on sale

7.3.08: Volkswagen has revealed full details of its range-topping Touareg luxury 4x4 – the R50 – which has more power and equipment, plus one of the most powerful diesel engines available on the market.

At the heart of the Touareg R50 is Volkswagen’s award-winning 5.0-litre V10 TDI engine, uprated from 313 PS to produce 350 PS at 3,500 rpm. Beyond the power output, the R50’s engine has also been given a substantial boost to produce an extra 100 Nm of torque: if the standard car’s 750 Nm was more than enough to enable the Touareg to tow a Boeing 747, pulling power of an enormous 850 Nm (627 lbs ft) sets the R50 yet further apart from the crowd.

The R50 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.7 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 146 mph. . Yet, despite its extra punch the Touareg R50 has the same fuel economy and CO2 output as the standard V10 TDI (22.4 mpg combined and 333 g/km).

Distinguishing the R50 from the previous range-topper, the Altitude V10 TDI, are a set of 21-inch ‘Omanyt’ ten-spoke alloy wheels and the Touareg ‘R’ design package which includes at the back a body-coloured roof spoiler, restyled body-coloured bumper and oval tailpipe trims. Wheel arch extensions and blue brake callipers enhance the distinctive wheels, while at the front the R50 gains a matt chrome radiator grille and louvres as well as honeycomb-style inserts in the airdams.

The R50 is priced at £61,885 (RRP OTR), representing a £3,885 premium over the Altitude V10 TDI. Prices for the Touareg range start at £29,880.

Only a limited number of Touareg R50s will be available for sale in the UK. For more details, please contact any of our four Volkswagen dealerships.

  Audi A4 voted Europe’s 2008 Auto 1 award winner

7.3.08: The all-new Audi A4 Saloon has been voted Europe’s Auto 1 by readers of Auto Express Magazine and its 25 Europe-wide sister publications. The overall winner’s trophy was presented to Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, during a ceremony at the Geneva Motor Show this week. The overall champion is selected by editors, experts and racing drivers linked to the 26 magazines, but their 40 million combined readers also play a key role in the judging process.

Built on a completely new chassis with longest-in-class wheelbase that not only maximizes driving appeal but also boosts cabin space, the new A4 Saloon is a major step forward over its predecessor in every area. It opened for order in September 2007 and the first examples are now being delivered to UK customers. In Geneva this year, the new A4 Avant also made its world debut.

Saloon model prices range from £19,890 OTR for the 1.8 TFSI 120PS to £32,445 OTR for the 3.0 TDI quattro S line, and Avant models start at £22,600 OTR for the 1.8 TFSI 160PS SE, rising to £32,800 OTR for the 3.0 TDI quattro S line. Orders are being taken now at our Audi dealerships in brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing, with first deliveries begining in June.

Married couple sets new fuel economy standards for SUVs in a Jeep® Compass and Jeep Patriot

7.3.08: Fuel economy experts John and Helen Taylor drove a Jeep Compass and a Jeep Patriot, both standard production 2.0-litre turbo diesel vehicles carrying two people and their luggage, from London to Berlin on less than a single tank of fuel each – an unmatched achievement among SUVs.

Upon arrival in Berlin, there was still enough fuel in both vehicles for them to continue the journey, crossing the border into Poland. In total, they travelled a total distance of 698.4 miles. During the 21-hour drive, passing through six countries, Helen achieved 66.76 mpg driving the Compass. John performed even better, achieving 67.46 mpg in the Patriot.

“We drove on normal roads at realistic speeds with two people and their luggage on board and the traffic and weather conditions weren’t favourable at all – cold with many traffic jams,” he said. “We used simple fuel economy driving techniques that any driver could replicate.” commented John. Helen added, “This record achievement challenges the myth that all SUVs are gas guzzlers. We’ve proven, in everyday driving conditions just how fuel efficient these two Jeep SUVs can be.”

The Jeep Compass and Patriot have already been praised by the media for their fuel efficiency. 4x4 & MPV Driver Magazine in the UK ranked Jeep ahead of all other manufacturers of 4x4s and SUVs by presenting the brand with a Gold Award in its 2007 Green Awards scheme.

Pace, style and advanced dynamics: the new Scirocco

4.3.08: The Scirocco’s back and, beneath striking new styling, lies the most dynamic and technologically advanced production coupé Volkswagen has ever built.

The essence of the original Scirocco is apparent in its modern day successor. The mix of distinctive coupé styling, a practical hatchback boot, a transversely mounted four-cylinder engine channelling drive through the front wheels and sharp, responsive dynamics that made the Scirocco such a success at launch in 1974 remains.

The aggressive yet cohesive design of the exterior runs into the new Scirocco’s interior. A contoured, flat-bottomed sports steering wheel frames dials that glow white at night. The interior is airy and light, while the option of an electrically-operated panoramic sunroof further emphasises the feeling of spaciousness.

Despite the focus on style and dynamics the Scirocco remains practical. The wide boot aperture leads to a 292 litre luggage space that can expand, via the split folding rear seats, to 755 litres. There are four, individual sculpted seats finished in a choice of either cloth or leather and, despite the sweeping roofline, all four occupants have extensive headroom.

Full UK specification and pricing will be announced in June when the car will be opened for ordering, prior to the first UK deliveries in September. Prices for the launch model are expected to start at around £20,000.

Jaguar XKR-S – The ultimate XK

4.3.08: The XKR-S coupe is the fastest production XK to date. Powered by Jaguar's 4.2litre V8 supercharged engine, it has been developed for the true Jaguar enthusiast. It is faster and more agile than the XKR, whilst retaining the refined, dynamic excellence and crafted luxury that is unique to Jaguar.

With recalibrated engine management, the car reaches an electronically limited top speed of 174mph (280kph) – 19mph (30kph) faster than the XKR.

The XKR-S has exceptional refinement and the option of ultra-fast manual shifts controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts – with shift times measured in milliseconds it is one of the fastest shifting transmissions in the world.

To match its increased performance, the XKR-S adopts the most powerful brakes on any Jaguar production model, plus extensive changes to its suspension and steering to provide further enhanced ride and handling characteristics without compromising comfort.

All the major suspension parameters are recalibrated, and the XKR-S uses Jaguar’s proven Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) with unique tuning. It also uses a faster ratio steering rack, for quicker reactions and optimum feel.

On sale this summer sales will be limited to just 200 cars in European markets only

All-new Ford Fiesta twins make debut

4.3.08: Ford's all-new Fiestas are guaranteed to wow the crowds. Taking much of their exterior and interior design from the striking Verve Concept, this next generation small car is fun-loving and stylish, sensational and safe.

More than 12 million Fiesta models have been sold since the Fiesta’s introduction in 1976, and the arrival of this latest version opens another chapter in the story of Ford’s most successful small car. Following the company’s ‘kinetic design’ philosophy introduced on all the latest models, the 2008 Fiesta marks a major leap forward in terms of style, craftsmanship, quality of materials and model choice.

The dimensions of the three- and five- door models are the same. The visual impact of the five- door is stunning because the kinetic styling has not been compromised. Full technical details and UK specifications will be released closer to the launch of the production model in autumn 2008.

Volvo unveils Volvo Ocean Race special edition models

4.3.08: Volvo has launched special Volvo Ocean Race editions of the V70, XC70 and XC90 at the Geneva Motor Show today.

Unique Ocean Blue pearlescent paint differentiates these special editions from the standard models and their appearance is enhanced with a new Volvo Ocean Race emblem and chrome exterior details. The cars are also available in Electric Silver. All feature full Ocean Race leather upholstery in Soft Beige or Off Black with the centre console and other details in silk matt aluminium inlays.

Interior details echo the materials used in masts and rigs. The stitching on the upholstery traces its roots to sail making. The aluminium detailing on the mats resembles clews and the design of the unique wheels has been inspired by the movement of the ocean’s waves.

Every model offers a choice of Volvo’s powerful, five-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, including the D5 turbo-diesel with 185bhp. Prices and full specifications will be announced ahead of the UK showroom arrival in June 2008.

The Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s most gruelling ocean adventure taking nearly nine months to sail 39,000 nautical miles of the globe’s most treacherous seas. The race begins on 4 October from Alicante in Spain and the finishing line is in St Petersburg, Russia, on 27 June 2009. Consisting of 10 legs there are after port stops in Cape Town (South Africa), Kochi (India), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Boston (USA), Galway (Ireland), Göteborg (Sweden) and Stockholm (Sweden). The 2008-09 event also includes an inshore race in most of the ports.

Production Q7 V12 TDI on the Audi stand in Switzerland

The first production version of the world’s most powerful diesel-powered passenger car - the Audi Q7 V12 TDI - will be launched at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

The highly efficient 6.0-litre engine uses two turbochargers and delivers a mammoth 1,000Nm torque peak at just 1,750rpm. A highly sophisticated piezo common rail fuel injection system boosts pressure in the injectors to an exceptional 2,000 bar and this, in combination with a specially developed exhaust gas recirculation system and a Diesel Particulate Filter, ensures that the proposed EU5 targets for emissions applicable from 2010 are met.

Honed with the expertise gained in the development of the Le Mans-winning V12 TDI-powered Audi R10 TDI endurance racer, the engine gives a 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.5 seconds, an electronically limited top speed of 155mph and a combined fuel economy figure of 23.7mpg.

The rate at which the Q7 V12 TDI can scrub off speed is also impressive, thanks to standard ceramic brakes which are largely insusceptible to heat fading and corrosion, and have an operating life of up to 185,000 miles – four times that of steel discs.

Externally, the Q7 V12 TDI makes its presence felt through its 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, wider arches, a unique chrome plated grille, LED strip daytime running lights, additional under-body protection panelling and large-bore exhausts. Inside, luxurious Verano leather icovers everything from the seven electrically adjustable seats to the door and centre armrests, and is complemented by carbon fibre inlays, aluminium air vents and stainless steel pedals.

European first for Ford as Foundation praises its allergy-friendly vehicles

4.3.08: Ford has become the first vehicle manufacturer to receive the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation's (ECARF) Seal of Quality. The research organisation awarded its sought-after Seal of Quality to six Ford models for their allergy-friendly interiors - the Ka, Focus, C-MAX, Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy.

ECARF reviewed tests from the TÜV Rheinland Group, an independent, authoritative organisation that controls and certifies quality standards for industrial and consumer products.

The TÜV has certified that the interior materials used in the six Fords reduce allergy risk to the lowest possible level. More than 100 materials and components were tested for harmful substances and allergy-causing potential. In addition, all components likely to have direct and prolonged skin contact, such as the steering wheel and seat covers, floor mats and seat belts, were dermatologically tested.

According to ECARF, "results showed that the materials used greatly reduce the risk of allergic reaction". Additionally, the vehicles are equipped with a high-performance pollen filter, which was also tested by TÜV and recognised by ECARF. The filter effectively prevents pollen – a particular concern for allergy sufferers – from entering the vehicle’s interior.

Audi Q7 coastline design study takes SUV luxury to the next level

4.3.08: Designed with the opulence of a classic luxury yacht in mind, the Q7 coastline design study is finished externally in Inuit, a special ultra-luminous shade of white, which is set off by the single frame grille and side air intakes in dark high gloss steel.

White also prevails inside, where an alabaster shade used extensively in yachting colours the majority of switches and controls, the instrument panel and cowl, the plush velvet and leather-upholstered seats and the carpet. For maximum impact the embroidered floor mats, the pillars, the roof lining, the steering wheel and the seatbelts are also colour matched in alabaster white.

The maritime theme is especially obvious in the dark waxed American walnut veneer which covers parts of the armrest, the inner door sill trims, the gear knob and, most prominently, the floor of the luggage compartment, giving it a deck-style look. Uniquely to the Q7 coastline, two neat expandable storage boxes are also incorporated in this floor.

  Land Rover LRX concept

4.3.08: A striking black and silver version of Land Rover's acclaimed LRX cross-coupe concept makes its global debut at the 78e Salon International de l'Automobile, alongside the original white LRX revealed earlier at NAIAS, Detroit, in January. No production plans have been confirmed yet for the LRX, and both versions will now be used to gauge public, dealer and media response to Land Rover's cross-coupe concept, as well as its interesting new opportunities for vehicle personalisation.

The LRX concept marks a bold evolution of Land Rover design, signalling the brand's potential shift into new areas of the market, while remaining true to its core values. As the company celebrates its 60th anniversary during 2008, the three-door LRX, with its more compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies, clearly addresses the needs of a changing world and offers the potential of 120 g/km CO2 emissions and fuel economy of 60 mpg (4.7 l/100 km) on the European combined cycle.

"The LRX concept delivers the powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it's a very different Land Rover.

The Roadster adds a fully automatic electrically operated soft-top and integrated wind deflector.

Councils told to make parking fairer, clearer and more open!

3.3.08: Motorists are set to benefit from fairer and more transparent parking system.

The new framework - which comes into force at the end of March - makes it clear that councils should not use parking enforcement as a tool for raising revenue, and should not set targets for the number of tickets issued.

They are also encouraged to let officers use more discretion over when a ticket is issued - including using verbal warnings for minor contraventions - and are strongly advised to only use wheel-clamping against those who persistently evade their penalty charges.

Outside London, councils will be able to issue lower penalties for less serious parking offences and details of procedures for appeals will have to be shown on the tickets. Independent parking adjudicators will also get more power, including the right to ask local authorities to reconsider penalty charges where motorists have mitigating circumstances.

The new framework also makes it clear that Local Authorities should: A) Publish and promote their parking enforcement policies, including penalty charge levels, openly and clearly. B) Regularly appraise their parking policies and consult drivers and businesses to ensure the system is working. C) Ensure that parking attendants have clear evidence that vehicle was parked in contravention before issuing a penalty charge notice. D) Make sure parking attendants and back office staff have the proper skills, training and resources to give the public a fair, consistent and professional service. E) Only use CCTV to enforce parking rules - which will be allowed for the first time outside London from 31 March - where it is impractical or dangerous for a parking attendant to operate.

Volvos new City Safety auto-brake technology is praised by Thatcham

3.3.08: Thatcham, the UK’s insurance organisation renowned for conducting research and development to promote safer cars, recently invited media, insurance companies and government agencies to a demonstration of three selected new technologies that can mitigate or prevent low-speed accidents. The one that made the greatest impression on everyone was Volvo City Safety, which will be a standard feature on the new Volvo XC60.

Auto-brake systems from two other manufacturers were also presented, but it was Volvo City Safety that made the greatest impression on both organisers and observers. “All three systems offer increased protection and Volvo’s system in particular impressed everyone with its autonomous function and because it intervenes at the last possible instant and can completely avoid a collision,” says Matthew Avery, head of research at Thatcham. He continued; “The system will have a great effect on the number of low-speed collisions – in England and in the rest of the world.”

75 percent of all collisions occur at speeds of 20 mph or lower. Volvo City Safety is a system that has been developed in-house to provide automatic braking at speeds under 20 mph and will be standard on the Volvo XC60. Together with Collision Warning with Autobrake, which will be available as an option, City Safety means that Volvo offers an auto-brake function at all speeds.

Volvo Cars is engaged in a dialogue with insurance companies about the possibility of offering lower premiums on cars fitted with City Safety.

Order books now open for the Škoda Fabia GreenLine

3.3.08: Our Škoda dealerships in Ashford and Tunbridge Wells are now taking orders for the fabulously frugal 1.4 TDI Fabia GreenLine. Boasting nearly 69mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 figures of 109g/km, these GreenLine models not only do their bit for the environment but should also make forecourt trips mercifully infrequent.

In estate guise the GreenLine boasts class-leading economy and environmental credentials - in fact, there is no greener or leaner estate currently on sale in the UK for the money (the Mini Clubman 1.6D has exactly the same CO2 and mpg figures, but costs £3,260 more). This has been achieved with additional aerodynamic panels fitted to the underside of the chassis, replacing the spare tyre with a puncture repair kit and raising the front bumper by 35mm.

All of this means that on a single tank of diesel a GreenLine driver could cover an incredible 689 miles. Compared to the standard 1.4 TDI Fabia 2 – on which the GreenLine is based – you should be able to eek out an extra 75 miles between fill ups!

Available in Amazon Green, Magic Black, Brilliant Silver or Candy White (and with unique GreenLine decals) the GreenLine is available to order now with first deliveries expected from the 21st of April.

Prices start at £11,490 for hatchback - £12,140 for estate.

Volkswagen Sharan Bluemotion debuts at Geneva show

3.3.08: The highly-successful BlueMotion vehicls - representing the most efficient model in each of Volkswagen’s passenger car ranges - is being joined by the new Sharan BlueMotion.

The virtues that have made the Sharan such a success – seven seats, a high level of standard safety equipment and an interior adept at handling the demands of family life – all remain. The BlueMotion adds to the its strengths by lowering its CO2 output whilst increasing its efficiency.

This has been achieved by fitting longer gear ratios to reduce the rate at which the engine is turning, adjusting the boost pressure on the turbocharger and the exhaust gas recirculation system, revising the location of the cooling ducts mounted on the nose of the vehicle and reducing the ride height by 25 mm resulting in the coefficient of drag falling from 0.31 to 0.29.

The result of these modifications is a drop in CO2 from 177 g/km to 159 g/km while economy rises to a combined 45.6 mpg. With the Sharan BlueMotion’s 70-litre fuel tank capacity, the theoretical range is in excess of 680 miles.

The Sharan BlueMotion is set to arrive in the UK later this year. Prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.

Can you be German but have French Flair?

25.2.08: With Wagner’s famous ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ providing a rousing score, the latest creative commercial from French car manufacturer, Citroën - the people that brought you the award winning dancing robot – confidently presents its new C5 saloon as ‘Unmistakeably German’.

The audacious 60-second film in partnership with Euro RSCG plays off the reputation of Citroën’s German rivals to highlight the Teutonic qualities of the brand new C5.

The blonde hero drives his “unidentified” car from a swashbuckling duel outside a snowy gothic castle to a traditional Bavarian hofbräuhaus, before joining the Autobahn to Berlin where he pulls up in front of the historic Brandenburg Gates.

Finally the narrator, Wolf Kahler, with German accent, introduces the campaign strapline, ‘Unmistakeably German’, wryly adding ‘Made in France’, to confirm that only Citroën could style such a car and provide the consumer with a strong and credible alternative.

Citroën is renowned for its original and memorable adverts. The dancing C4 robot became an overnight cult success - as well as inspiring several other amusing parodies. The Citroën C5 campaign is due to be launched in cinemas from February 22nd and on national television from April 2nd.

Meriva Concept: the next level of flexibility

21.2.058: With the dynamically styled Meriva Concept, Opel/Vauxhall presents the next level of monocab flexibility at the International Motor Show in Geneva (March 6 – 16, 2008).

The concept features rear-hinged rear doors on both sides of the car called FlexDoors. While the front doors are conventionally designed with front hinges, the rear doors swing open towards the back of the car. Another feature of the family-oriented Meriva Concept is that the front and rear doors can open independently of each other. Rear-hinged rear doors currently on the market can only be opened after the front door has been opened, which severely limits their practicality.

FlexDoors’ smooth operation is backed up by an array of patented innovations, including a safety system that ensures the doors can only be opened from the inside or outside when there is no risk to the passengers. The Meriva Concept also features an automatic electronic child lock, which supplements the conventional mechanical system.

  The new Audi A4 Avant

21.2.08: Audi’s all-new A4 Avant has a largest-in-class 1,430 litre load bay, a new, reconfigured suspension set-up and longest-in-class wheelbase for much improved driver appeal and cabin space. Increased leg room greatly enhances comfort for rear seat passengers in particular, and when all seats are filled the load area with its versatile reversible load floor is a largest-in-class 490-litres.

Access to the load bay can be facilitated by an optional powered tailgate. Loads can be secured with the standard luggage net and tie-down straps, or with the telescopic bar and securing belt system first seen in the A4 Avant, also available at extra cost.

The Avant launches in the UK with a choice of either SE or more sporting S line specification options, and with five state-of-the-art FSI direct petrol injection and common rail piezo TDI engines – 1.8 Turbo FSI petrol (160PS), 3.2 V6 FSI petrol (265PS), 2.0 TDI (143PS), 2.7 TDI (190PS), 3.0 TDI (240PS)

Depending on the engine chosen, there will be the option of either the latest 6-speed manual gearbox, a faster-shifting 6-speed tiptronic automatic or an updated and even smoother version of the ultra-efficient multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Driver assistance options will include Audi side assist, which uses sensors to warn of vehicles approaching in mirror blind spots, and Audi lane assist, which guards against unintentional lane changes by activating steering wheel vibrations to alert the driver.

Available to order from early March, the new load carrier is expected to carry a premium of approximately £1,200 over its saloon equivalent (SE saloon OTR prices range from £22,590 to £30,290).

Citroën announces UK launch date for new C5

21.2.08: Citroën’s highly anticipated new C5 saloon will be available our Uckfield showroom from 2nd April, followed by the Tourer in the summer.

Exceptionally well equipped, the C5 and C5 Tourer will boast a long list of standard features, a choice of six engines and, for the first time in the segment, the option of two suspension systems.

Sharing the front-end styling of the Saloon version, the Tourer is characterised by a sculpted rear that unites style with load space. At 4.83m long (5cm longer than the Saloon) and 1.86m wide, the Tourer has the elegant and dynamic appearance of the Saloon, but with added room and functionality.

Maximising the space offered by the C5’s floor pan, the Tourer’s boot has a capacity of 533 litres making it one of the most spacious in the segment. When the rear seats are folded, capacity increases to a total of 1,490 litres. A panoramic glass roof with an electric sunblind is available.

Adding to the extensive list of equipment available in salon, the Tourer can have a motorised tailgate. Easily accessible controls positioned on the tailgate allow drivers to open and close the boot automatically. The tailgate can also be opened remotely from a button on the C5’s key fob, whilst users can set the required elevation – a handy feature when boot access is restricted.

Other neat design features include shopping bag hooks on the boot side walls, side storage nets for stowing loose objects, a luggage cover blind and a cargo net with ceiling hooks for the transportation of large items. A clever dual-function flashlight mounted into the wall of the boot functions as a boot light but it can also be removed and used as a hand-held torch.

Geneva global debut for new Fiesta

21.2.08: Fun-loving and fashionable, sensational and safe; Ford's all-new Fiesta will wow the crowds when the wraps come off at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.

Taking much of its exterior and interior design from the striking Verve Concept, the three and five-door sixth generation small car promises to shake up the supermini scene at its global premiere.

Following the company’s ‘kinetic design’ philosophy introduced on all the latest models, the 2008 Fiesta marks a major leap forward in terms of style, craftsmanship, quality of materials and model choice.

Inside, Ford’s Convers+ system – already available on the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy – is just one of several new features and technologies on the car. Connectivity is another new Fiesta strength. The centre console features a tray for MP3 players complete with built-in sockets for an auxiliary (AUX) audio and USB cables. This allows the car's audio system to control and charge the MP3 player. Bluetooth® connectivity with voice control is also offered.

Powering the Fiesta is a mix of efficient petrol and diesel engines. The 1.25-litre (60 and 80PS) and 1.4-litre (91PS) Duratec petrol units are joined by a new Duratec 1.6-litre Ti-VCT (115PS) option. Ford’s TDCi common-rail diesel engines will continue to be offered in 1.4-litre (68PS) and 1.6-litre (90PS) guises. Later in 2008 a Fiesta ECOnetic with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km will become available.

All Fiestas will be equipped with Ford Durashift 5-speed manual transmission with a 4-speed automatic available on selected models and Electric-Power Assist Steering (E-PAS) is introduced in the Fiesta for the first time.

The car is due to be launched in the autumn.
