Know Your tyres and the law
To be on the road, tyre's must be free of any defects and correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer recommended pressure.
A fit for purpose tyre must be:
- free of any lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial failure of the structure.
- compatible with the types of tyres fitted to the other wheels.
- free of any cut or tear in excess of 25mm or 10% of the sectional width of the tyre, whichever is greater, and which is deep enough to reach the ply or cord without any part of the ply or cord exposed.
- have a minimum of 1.6mm tyre tread depth across the central three quarters of the tyre in a continuous band across the entire circumference.
If a vehicle is found to have a tyre that does not meet these standards, or have tyres with different nominal size or aspect ratio fitted on the same axle, it will result in a failed MOT.
Also, a driver found to be driving on damaged or illegal tyres could be fined by the police for up to £2,500 and receive 3 penalty points for each illegal tyre. Thus, if all four tyres are found to be illegal the driver could receive 12 penalty points and be immediately disqualified.
