Audi e-tron Demonstrates Virtual Reality Experience At CES 2019

Audi has presented its ideas for the future of backseat entertainment at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2019 in Las Vegas. The event ran from 8th – 11th January.

Audi’s main focus for the event was showcasing how they plan to redefine in-car entertainment. In the future, backseat passengers will be able to experience movies, video games and interactive content more realistically using virtual reality glasses.

The manufacturer demonstrated this futuristic technology with a ‘Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run’ prototype. Attendees were invited to wear VR glasses in the back of the Audi e-tron to try out the experience. Every movement of the car is reflected in the game in real time, for example when the e-tron accelerates or turns, the ship in the experience does the same as they make their way through an asteroid field together with Rocket, a character appearing in Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Endgame in spring.

Through a subsidiary, Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, Audi has co-founded a start-up company, holoride GmbH, which will commercialise this new form of entertainment. It will be made available to all carmakers and content developers in the future.

Nils Wollny, head of Digital Busines at Audi and future CEO of holoride explained: “Creative minds will use our platform to come up with fascinating worlds that turn the journey from A to B into a real adventure.”

Audi and Marvel Studios have been teaming up since the Audi R8 appeared in the 2008 film release Iron Man.

Mike Goslin, Vice President at Disney Games and Interactive Experiences, commented: “Audi, Marvel and Disney Games and Interactive Experiences are celebrating Marvel Studios’ 10th anniversary with an Avengers experience that combines world class content and innovative technology. While this CES demo was developed purely in the spirit of exploration and experimentation, we are constantly evaluating emerging technologies to enhance our stories and experiences.”
