ŠKODA KODIAQ: The Remote Emergency Responder
It is with great pleasure to announce the addition of the ŠKODA KODIAQ to the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Critical Care Team, helping the critical care team reach emergencies where a helicopter is not suitable.
From Bristol, Bath, North Somerset and North East Somerset, to Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, the critical care team already offers the benefits of a Helimed 65 helicopter which responds to the most serious incidents.
With the addition of the robust and capable ŠKODA KODIAQ, the team are more capable of helping patients in an emergency when it’s unsuitable for a helicopter to fly or when the location is easier to access by road. And with over 2,000 call outs in 2019, of which over two thirds are handled with the use of the critical care cars, the KODIAQ is a welcome addition to the fleet, basting a 2.0-litre TDI 190PS engine with 4X4 capabilities.
From the 0-62mph time of just over 8 seconds, a spacious interior, off-road capacity and an impressive loading space for equipment, the critical care team benefits from the KODIAQ’s broadness and flexibility, helping to ensure a quick response to the scene of an incident, with all the essential equipment on board.
However, this ŠKODA SUV is not the same as the ones you would find in the showroom as it has been redesigned to fully meet the needs of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. The 720-litre boot effectively houses life saving equipment such as oxygen tanks and ventilators, whilst the infotainment system has been moved in order to install a 999-response screen, providing the on-board crew with details of each emergency and the quickest route to the scene.
The exterior is clearly identifiable thanks to the bespoke air ambulance livery and lighting system, making the ŠKODA KODIAQ aesthetically pleasing and the perfect vehicle for the job. Extra finishing touches also add to the SUV, all provided by ŠKODA’s approved convertor Halls Electrical Ltd.
“Having reliable, appropriate and fully equipped cars are essential for us to reach and treat patients in the most effective way. The new ŠKODA vehicles will enable our team to negotiate tougher terrain and drive safely in challenging weather conditions to reach patients quickly and safely, particularly in rural areas.”
John Wood, Air Operations Officer at Great Western Air Ambulance Charity
