The New Audi A1 Sportback
The second-generation Audi A1 is strikingly sculptured for a masculine and sporty look. Now slightly longer, the new A1 measures 13.2ft long and 5.7ft wide. The wide track and short overhangs, as well as the single frame grille and side air inlets highlight the sporting character of the model.
The new A1 Sportback resembles the Audi Ur-quattro and Sport quattro from a side-on view, thanks to the wide, flat and sloping C-pillar, roof contrast and smooth lines inclining to the rear. Customers who opt for the S Line trim will be able to accentuate the models sporty edge with larger air inlets, additional sill trims, a larger rear wing and an elongated slit centrally below the hood with two fins. Those models featuring the top-of-the-range engine will be distinguishable with its striking twin tailpipes.
Drawing inspiration from sailing, the daytime running lights echo the dynamic wing shapes known as hydrofoils on sail boats and the design of the shutters for the main light functions are also inspired by sailing.
Customers can choose from 10 colours to create their new Audi A1 Sportback and can opt to finish the roof in a contrasting colour.
Another available trim is the Edition, which is based on the equipment found in the S Line. Distinctively designed, the Edition trim features 18” alloy wheels in either bronze, white or black, Audi rings set in the side of the car in the rim colour, dark-tinted LED headlights and rear lights and black Audi rings and model designation on the rear.
For increased flexibility in design, customers can combine exterior and interior lines however they please. Depending on the equipment level, customers can opt from “Interior Advanced”, “Interior design selection” and “Interior S Line” and choose from a wide range of colours and materials.
Driver-focused and emotive, the interior has been ergonomically designed to be comfortable and relaxing. All controls and the optional MMI Touch Display are aimed towards the driver to help minimise distraction and emphasise the cockpit feel. Plenty of space is available in the A1 and despite the sloping roof and exterior dimensions, rear passengers will be able to enjoy plenty of head and leg room. Audi have increased the storage space by an extra 2.3ft, offering a total 1,090 litres of space with the rear seats folded down.
As standard, the new Audi A1 Sportback will feature a high-resolution 10.25” display and a multifunction steering wheel. The Audi Virtual Cockpit is optional, bringing an extended range of functions including animated navigation maps and info-graphics of driver assistance systems. Also, as standard is MMI radio, which can be controlled via the fully digital instrument cluster and multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. For more features, MMI navigation offers a 10.1” touchscreen that is seamlessly integrated in the fascia and controlled with touch and voice.
The Audi smartphone interface integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to ensure you stay well connected. The interface system also features two USB sockets and the option to add a wireless charging system. For the best sound quality, Audi has partnered with Bang & Olufsen to offer their Premium Sound System with 11 speakers. The sound system’s 3D effect uses the windshield as a reflecting surface for a more immersive sound. The new Audi A1 Sportback features the following innovative driver assistance systems: Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limiter, Audi Pre-sense Front, Automatic Emergency Braking, Adaptive Speed Assist and a reversing camera with a rear parking system. Audi Pre-sense Front works with a radar sensor to identify critical situations involving other vehicles or crossing pedestrians or cyclists. The radar system works even when conditions are poor, such as fog. To warn the driver, the system sets of acoustic and visual signals.
The Audi A1 can perform autonomously perform parallel parking manoeuvres, as well as perpendicular parking spaces, and can navigate out of the spaces as well.
Ranging from 95hp to 200hp, the engines in the new Audi A1 Sportback are turbocharging and feature a direct injection and particulate filter as standard. Customers can choose from manual or seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, which are both available on every engine, with the exception of the top-of-the-line engine that comes with a six-speed S tronic transmission as standard.
The new Audi A1 Sportback will be available to order from Summer 2018 and is expected to arrive in showrooms in late 2018.
