The New Audi A8 To Feature Electrified Powertrain As Standard

The all-new Audi A8 range, debuting next month at the Audi Summit in Barcelona on Tuesday 11th July, will be the first in the brand's history to feature an electrified drivetrain as standard, thus representing a big milestone on the e-mobility pathway.

The flagship, luxury saloon is powered by combustion engines equipped with hybrid technology based around a 48-volt electrical system. This technology will benefit the performance and refinement of the range, along with increasing efficiency.

There are two main components to the mild hybrid drive; first, the watercooled 48-volt belt alternator starter (BAS); and the lithium-ion battery in the luggage compartment to act as the energy accumulator for the MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicle) with a 10 Ah charge carrier capacity and a 48-volt system.

The BAS is permanently connected to the combustion engine, which can be particularly advantageous when the vehicle approaches a red traffic signal or a roundabout. If, whilst the driver is braking, a signal turns green and the driver releases the brake the combustion engine will start immediately to allow the driver to move seamlessly forwards.

The four-generation A8 can coast with zero emissions for up to 40 seconds with the engine off altogether, as well as entering into noiseless coasting mode with the speed range of 34mph to 99mph.

Differing vastly from previous systems in the Audi A8 range, the start/stop function can distinguish between different traffic situations. Conveniently, when the vehicle in front of the Audi A8 moves the combustion engine starts up even if the brake is still pressed. Also, if the road ahead is clear, the BAS starts the combustion engine promptly, allowing the A8 to drive off quickly.

Fuel consumption is reduced during customer operation by the mild hybrid drive by up to 0.7 litres per 100 kilometres (62.1 miles).

The new Audi A8 will make its world debut in Barcelona at the first Audi Summit on Tuesday 11th July, meanwhile; view the current Audi range here.
