The New Q8, Audi’s New Flagship SUV

Previewed at the Geneva and Detroit Motor Shows, the new Audi Q8 sits above the Q7 in the range and will produced in Slovakia, at Audi’s Bratislava plant. The model is expected to have the same wheelbase length as the Q7, with a similar total length of over five metres, but should be 40mm lower to the ground. The Q8 has a 630-litre boot to make space for all the family.

Outside, the design features a tapered rear end and sloping roofline, much like the concept car. The concept model also features new Matrix LED headlamps and sits on 23-inch alloy wheels with carbon-ceramic brakes. Not much is known about the interior yet, other than it will feature a wraparound dashboard and a host of new technology.

The concept Q8 featured a e-tron plug-in hybrid powertrain, which teamed a 17.9kWh lithium-ion battery pack & electric motor with a 3.0-litre TFSI engine. Audi’s study into hybrid engines “demonstrates their importance once again”, suggesting the petrol-engine powertrain could feature in the production Q8.

The initial Q8 release will be followed by an Audi SQ8, likely to have the same engine as a high performance SQ7, a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 diesel, producing 429bhp.
