Third Generation SEAT Leon is the Best Selling Ever

The third generation SEAT Leon has been on sale for less than 5 years, since the end of 2012 and over 682,567 units have been sold making it the highest selling compact car in the brands history. Combined with the excellent results of the previous two models launched in 1999 and 2005 respectively, SEAT has sold 1,893,279 units of the Leon.

The Leon is known as one of the SEAT’s flagship models and the brands recent transformation was encouraged by the performance generated from the current generation, thanks to SEAT sales rising steadily since 2013. The Leon, Ibiza and Ateca are the three pillars of SEAT.

Wayne Griffiths, SEAT Vice-President for Sales and Marketing, commented: “the third generation Leon has signalled a turning point for SEAT and is one of the company’s main drivers for change. It is our top-selling model and has enabled us to take a great leap, in our fleet business as well, thanks to the successful estate version we added to the range for the first time in this generation. The Leon CUPRA, the most powerful SEAT in the history of the brand, is an icon that represents the essence of the brand, and it has also helped us reach customers who are seeking an even sportier, more emotional car.”

The original LEON was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and created in 1999 and sold 534,797 units until 2005. The second generation was designed by Walter de’Silva and sold 675,915 units until 2012. The current third-generation Leon was designed by Alejandro Mesonero-Romano, and was the first of the series to have a three-door variant and different body styles, such as the X-Perience and ST Estate versions. The highest selling version of the Leon is the family sized option. The Leon ST estate has also helped boost SEAT’s fleet sales by more than 90%.
