Vauxhall Builds 4 Millionth Brit-Built Astra

This week, Vauxhall have celebrated building their 4 millionth Astra model at Ellesmere Port.

To mark the iconic moment, the plant carefully choreographed a display of 236 Astra Sport Tourers to spell out the number. It took 12 hours to create, using 57 red and 179 white vehicles.

Ellesmere Port has been proudly making the car for almost 40 years since 1981, producing all seven generations of the famous model and exporting over two million to 25 European markets, as well as Australia in the early years. The plant has created employment opportunities for many generations of local families over the years and currently employs almost 2,000 people.

Denis Chick, Director of Communications at Vauxhall Motors commented: “The Vauxhall Astra has been one of Britain’s best-selling and best-loved cars for almost four decades, and we’re proud to manufacture it here in the UK at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. We felt the production of our 4 millionth Astra was worth celebrating and, as always, the team at Ellesmere Port has stepped up to the challenge by creating this stunning image.”

One in four Brits has owned or driven an Astra and collectively 216 billion miles have been driven in the model. The length of 4 million Astras placed end to end would take you to China and back, whilst their combined height is equal to the height of 62,500 Big Bens.
