Volkswagen Golf & up! Win At The Auto Express New Car Awards

Volkswagen have received two awards at the annual Auto Express New Car Awards for their Golf and up! models.

The Golf once again earned the title of the best Compact Family Car of the Year, with the up! receiving an award for City Car of the Year.

One of the reasons the Golf received the award again was due to its 2017 redesign that refreshed the model, in addition to bringing new engines and enhancements to the safety and infotainment technology. It was pointed out that Volkswagen didn't change the perfect core parts of the Golf that made it great in the first place.

The Golf was also recognised for its practicality, specifically its spacious interior that contains many clever storage features. Additionally, most Golf models include the Discover Navigation System as standard, which also helped the Golf win thanks to the high-resolution, quick response and the bountiful amount of features included with the system.

Specifically, the 108bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol powerplant Golf was picked out for its clean and powerful engine that has a fuel efficiency of 60mph. A wide variety of Golf models are available, such as the e-Golf which is purely powered by electricity or the renowned Golf GTI which guarantees an enthralling performance, or the Golf R which is even faster attributed to its four-wheel drive system.

Not to be forgotten, the Volkswagen up! also received an award for being the Auto Express chosen City Car of the Year. The up! was praised for its engine that has more naturally aspirated units that are affordable, with two turbo options also available. These being the 89bhp 1.0-litre engine and the 113bhp GTI which was introduced this year.

The up! also received praise due to how fun it is to drive, with the GTI further improving the driving experience. The compact chassis delivers solid body control and with the low kerb weight, lots of traction and agility is ensured. The up! GTI further improved the driving experience with its accurate steering and positive gearshifts. Another advantage of the compact body is that it is very simple to drive and park in tight areas such as parking lots, congestion and town centres. But with the inclusion of features such as cruise control and heated front seats, the up! is also ideal for any long journeys.

With a 251-litre boot, the up! can comfortably seat up to four adults whilst stilling have a highly efficient fuel economy. Another notable feature of the up! cabin is the fact that the infotainment system uses your smartphone instead of an in-built screen.

Auto Express also specifically gave praise to the up! 1.0 S/S High up! due to its very strong 74bhp engine and functions such as cruise control and autonomous braking.
