Volkswagen Launches Electric For All Campaign
Last week Volkswagen launched their new Electric For All campaign, reaffirming the automaker’s commitment to accessible e-mobility.
During the event, Volkswagen announced that they will be releasing many attractive electric vehicles at affordable prices. They also premiered their modular electric drive matrix (MEB) – a newly developed technology platform specifically for electric vehicles. The Volkswagen ID. will be the world’s first series vehicle based on this MEB technology and will begin production in Zwickau at the end of 2019. Volkswagen provided attendees with an insight into the technological basis of the ID., where they demonstrated the MEB’s rolling chassis exactly as it will be used in series models. They also presented a prototype of the ‘Volks-Wallbox’ – an affordable home charging system for the ID..
All members of the ID. family will be designed for fast charging. The fast charging system can charge the battery to 80 percent in around 30 minutes thanks to the significantly more powerful battery system developed by Volkswagen Group Compenents.
Brand Board Member for E-Mobility, Thomas Ulbirch, commented: “We will make electric vehicles popular and get as many people as possible excited about electric cars. The MEB is one of the most important projects in the history of Volkswagen – a technological milestone, similar to the transition from the Beetle to the Golf.”
Speaking about the MEB system, he added: “Some 10 million vehicles across the Group will be based on this platform in the first wave alone. The MEB is the economic and technological backbone of the electric car for all.”
Volkswagen plans to sell 150,000 electric cars, including 100,000 ID. models, by 2020.
