25 Years of the SEAT Leon

The SEAT Leon is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Since originally launching in 1999, the model has become a benchmark of technology, design and equipment in the compact car segment, leading the way for four generations.

The SEAT Leon is one of the most successful models ever created by SEAT and is proud to be designed, developed and produced entirely in Barcelona, where more than 2.5 million units have been manufactured to date. The first-generation Leon was the brand’s first model to feature four-wheel drive, powered with a six-speed gearbox and the ability to deliver up to 180hp.

In 2005, the second generation arrived featuring a bolder and more aerodynamic design, designed by Walter de Silva. The model’s recessed rear door handles making it look like a 2-door model revolutionised the segment, whilst its sporty looks were also reflective of its performance, featuring more efficient engines.

The third generation SEAT Leon used cutting-edge technology to create a truly outstanding model in the segment, featuring full LED lighting, new infotainment systems and driver safety assistance. This generation of the model is the best-selling SEAT Leon to date, exceeding over one million units delivered.

A new, fourth generation SEAT Leon has been launched for the 25th anniversary, featuring a 1.5 e-HYBRID engine with 83 miles of electric range. This model is the most technologically advanced in the history of the brand and is the first 100% connected vehicle. It can be charged in just 26 minutes, for optimum convenience. Innovative Matrix LED headlights offer exceptional visibility without dazzling other road users, whilst also featuring improved safety and lighting systems.

Since its 1999 debut, the SEAT Leon has enjoyed lots of success including dozens of awards, from the 2014 and 2021 ‘Car of the Year’ awards in Spain to the 2021 ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Family Car of the Year’ awards in Portugal. It also won ‘Import Car of the Year’ in Argentina. The model’s sporting qualities also led to many victories on the race track, winning back-to-back World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) titles in 2008 and 2009. This made SEAT the first brand in history powered by a diesel engine to win a FIA (International Automobile Federation) world title.

During its 25 years, the SEAT Leon has been the star of many unforgettable moments including featuring in films such as 3 Days to Kill, Men in Black: International and in TV series Dark and Sherlock. In 2020, the SEAT Leon Trencadis was created as a tribute to architect Antonio Gaudi, featuring unique camouflage exterior. In 2018, the SEAT Leon Cristobal concept car was fitted with up to 16 safety assistants to prevent as many traffic accidents as possible.
