The Audi A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e has received a technology upgrade, featuring a larger battery, 50kW DC fast charging, and an electric range of up to 88 miles. Its intelligent drive management boosts efficiency, recuperation, and emission-free driving. Available in the UK from November, it starts at £39,150.
The new drive system features a turbocharged 1.5 TFSI evo2 engine and an electric motor with increased power density, replacing the 1.4 TFSI engine. With engineering developments and advanced technology including a variable turbine geometry, Miller cycle, and a higher 11.5:1 compression ratio, it offer improved efficiency while lowering fuel consumption and emissions. Injection pressure is now up to 350 bar (previously 200 bar), and plasma-coated cylinder liners and cooling channel pistons further enhance performance.
The high-voltage battery's gross capacity has nearly doubled to 25.7kWh, with a net capacity of 19.7kWh, thanks to improved cell chemistry and packaging. The 96 prismatic cells now store 50% more energy, increasing the electric range up to 88 miles (WLTP). A cooling circuit optimises battery temperature. In the UK, the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e combines a 150PS 1.5-litre TFSI evo2 engine with an electric motor for a total of 204PS and 350Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds, with a top speed of 140mph, and 87mph in electric mode.
The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e’s plug-in hybrid system is designed for maximum efficiency. It always starts in electric mode, even in temperatures as low as -28°C. The driver can prioritise electric driving via the EV button or MMI. In "Auto Hybrid" mode, the electric motor handles low speeds, while the TFSI engine takes over at higher speeds, with both working together as needed. The system can coast, recuperate, or boost power, and maintains the battery charge for later use, such as in low-emission zones.
For the first time, Audi is offering DC fast charging for a plug-in hybrid model. The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e supports up to 50 kW DC charging, enabling convenient electric travel. The battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.
The A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e showcases its sporty side in the S mode of its dual-clutch transmission. In "Auto Hybrid" mode, the full system power is unleashed during kickdown, providing a 40 kW boost for up to 15 seconds, or up to 18 seconds in ideal conditions.
