New Audi A5 e-hybrid Details Released
Audi A5 e-hybrid

Details about the new Audi A5 e-hybrid have been revealed. It is the first time a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been offered in the A5 series.

Available as both Avant and Saloon e-hybrid quattro variants, the models offer a total power output of 299PS (220Kw). This increased efficiency and power is due to a high-voltage battery with more capacity, higher energy density and smart recuperation strategy. The model’s intelligent hybrid management also means drivers can enjoy up to 67 miles of pure electric range.

“As part of our model initiative, we are significantly expanding our range of plug-in hybrids in 2025. Our new generation of plug-in hybrid models offers a sporty and comfortable driving experience as well as a harmonious balance between performance and efficiency.”

- Gernot Döllner, Audi CEO

The Audi A5 Avant e-hybrid quattro and the Audi A5 Saloon e-hybrid quattro are powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine with an output of 252PS (185kW) and an electric motor that delivers up to 142PS (105kW). The combined total power output is 299PS (220kW). The new high-voltage battery at the rear of the vehicle has a boosted capacity of 25.9kWh, a gain of roughly 45 percent. Its maximum charging power has also increased to 11kW, reducing charging time from 0 – 100 percent to just 2.5 hours.

The model has two operating modes: EV and hybrid. In EV mode, the PHEV runs exclusively on electric power. When in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level needed to save electrical energy for later use, for example whilst driving in a busy city. For the first time, desired charge levels can now be individually selected using a digital slider, in addition to automatic hybrid mode. Compared to the PHEV predecessor generation of the A6, Audi has also significantly increased regenerative braking performance in the new A5 e-hybrid.

“The increased electric range of our new plug-in hybrids enables our customers to cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power. Our hybrid technology combines the best of both worlds and provides a high degree of flexibility for everyday life. And with the new technology designation ‘e-hybrid,’ this is now also recognisable at first glance.”

- Geoffrey Bouquot, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG

As with the whole A5 family, the PHEV models come with impressive standard specification such as three-zone automatic air conditioning, auxiliary air conditioning and 18” wheels. The air conditioning can also be turned on remotely via the myAudi app, to ensure the interior is at the perfect temperature before you get in. The cabin’s smartphone interface connects your smartphone to the vehicle, displaying content directly on the MMI touch display. For additional comfort, the model features front sport seats and improved lateral support, as well as thigh support, integrated head restraints and pronounced seat side bolsters.

The Avant boasts generous boot space of 361 litres, increasing to 1,306 with the rear bench down, whilst the Saloon offers 331 litres, increasing up to 1,175.

Prices for the A5 e-hybrid start from £48,950 in the UK and sales will begin on 7th May. First customer deliveries are expected by mid-June.
