Volvo Cars has reached an important milestone, producing its four millionth vehicle built on the pioneering first-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). First introduced in 2014 with the second-generation Volvo XC90, SPA transformed the way Volvo designs and builds its cars, creating a flexible platform capable of supporting multiple models, powertrains and technologies on the same assembly line.

Developed entirely in-house through a Swedish-led R&D effort, SPA has since underpinned six different Volvo models manufactured across four countries – Sweden, Belgium, China and the United States. The milestone vehicle, a Volvo XC90, was recently completed at the company’s Torslanda plant in Sweden.
SPA also advanced Volvo's reputation for safety, introducing world-first innovations such as run-off road protection, intersection auto brake and a reinforced safety cage using high-strength boron steel. The platform's versatility allowed for design breakthroughs like the signature 'Thor’s Hammer' running lights and the introduction of Twin Engine plug-in hybrid technology.
As Volvo continues evolving with SPA2 and future SPA3 platforms, the legacy of innovation, flexibility and safety established by SPA lives on. Many SPA-based vehicles also continue to benefit from free over-the-air software updates, keeping them as advanced as the day they left the factory.
