Volkswagen Celebrates 50 Years of the Polo
Polo

The Volkswagen Polo has been delighting generations of drivers since 1975, turning 50 years old this year. The model has sold more than 20 million units in six generations, establishing itself as one of the most successful models in the small compact car class.

When the Beetle was due to be replaced in the 1970s, Volkswagen released the Passat and Golf in 1973 and 1974 respectively. The Polo then made its debut in 1975, perfectly rounding off the then new model family. Now 50 years later, the Polo has proven how a small car can remain extremely popular. From first driving lessons to family adventures, the model has always offered state-of-the-art technology and affordable mobility for everyone.

When the car was first introduced in March 1975, it was based on the Audi 50. Going into production in Wolfsburg as the Volkswagen Polo, it offered drivers a clean design and high functionality. Efficient, practical, affordable and lightweight, the model was also praised for its agility, handling and economical engines. These core virtues have continued the model’s success story ever since.

From 1981 onwards, a number of improvements were made to the Polo II including more space and comfort, as well as modernised engines. The third generation in 1994 was one of the first in its class to feature innovative safety features such as airbags and in 1998, it was available for the first time as a GTI.

The fourth generation in 2002 added front and side airbags, power steering and ABS as standard. From 2009, the Polo V added a host of infotainment and assistance systems to provide an even more comfortable driving experience. The fifth generation also impressed in motorsport, with the Polo R WRC winning the World Rally Championship title four times in a row from 2013.

The sixth generation, based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) set new standards in connectivity, safety and driving dynamics in 2017. Further upgrades in 2021 ensured the model became even more digital and innovative, now boasting assistance and comfort systems that are otherwise only featured in higher vehicle classes.
